Top marks for Harrow care home

Home news

A Harrow care home has been praised by national inspectors for its approach to care.

The Care Quality Commission’s (CQC) report gave Care UK’s Buchanan Court, on Sudbury Hill, an overall ‘Good’ rating, following an unannounced inspection.

The home received ‘good’ ratings in all five categories, including safety, effectiveness, level of care, responsiveness and having a well-led service.Top marks for Harrow care home

The report praised the home’s activity-based approach to caring for residents. Inspectors were impressed with the dedicated lifestyle team and the array of activities on offer every day. Alongside arts, craft and chair exercise sessions, residents are encouraged to try new hobbies and activities too. This included looking after ducklings’ eggs in spring, before they were given a forever home by Buchanan Court’s Home Manager once hatched – this proved to be a very popular activity.

Buchanan Court also impressed CQC inspectors with it warm and friendly atmosphere. In addition to witnessing positive, caring interactions between residents and team members, inspectors noted the open and inclusive culture at Buchanan Court, putting people at the heart of the service. This includes tailored care plans, taking into account the individual’s needs, but also their beliefs and preferences. A relative said: “Just wanted to say a big thank you to all of you for the amazing work you are doing. My relative always praises all of you for your hard work.”

The report also noted the home’s proactive approach to ensuring residents kept in close contact with their families throughout the pandemic. A relative commented: “I am very satisfied with the care provided throughout the pandemic.”

Ana Tudorache, Home Manager at Buchanan Court, said: “We are delighted to receive this Good CQC rating.

“The past year has been challenging, so this result is a true testament to the team’s caring, passionate attitude and to their hard work ensuring residents receive high-quality, round-the-clock care.

“We have a clear, person-centered ethos which includes compassion, dignity, respect and safety, and we’ve worked hard to create an open and transparent culture among team members too, enabling them to do their jobs in the best possible conditions. I’d like to say a big thank you to the team for creating a nurturing, warm environment that residents are proud to call home.”

To assess service standards at Buchanan Court, the CQC inspectors spoke with team members, residents, and their visiting relatives on the day of the inspection. They also reviewed the records and procedures already in place at the care home.

Buchanan Court provides full-time residential and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care. Designed to enable its residents to live enjoyable and fulfilling lives, the care home has its very own bar and hair salon, and there is plenty of space both in and outdoors for relaxation and recreation.
