Game of Throws – Kingston Vale care home warms up for the Olympics

Home news

With the Olympics officially under way, a local care home has kicked off its own tournament.

Residents at Care UK’s Sherwood Grange, on Robin Hood Lane, brought Tokyo to Kingstone Vale with their own version of the Games.

As part of the week-long garden tournament, residents competed against team members in a range of different sports including boules, tennis and table tennis. Ensuring the scene was set for an Olympic occasion, the team at Sherwood Grange went above and beyond by decorating the garden with flags from all the participating nations.

Residents were also encouraged to share their favourite sporting memories. One resident, Sean, reflected on his childhood and diving fearlessly off a 10m high board with his brothers in Dublin. Another resident, Jenny, remembered fondly how she challenged her younger niece to a swimming race and won, much to her niece’s surprise.

Residents also explored the Japanese culture by learning about the similarities and differences between the Land of the Rising Sun and Britain, including food, history, values and way of life.

Rick Mayne, Home Manager at Sherwood Grange, said: “We strive to create an environment that enables people to live fulfilling lives, so we regularly encourage physical activity as a way of improving residents’ physical and mental wellbeing, as well as discovering new things. Our own Olympic Games-themed event was a great opportunity to stay active, create something fun and lift everyone’s spirits.

“Like any international event, the Olympics showcases our undisputed national pride while offering an opportunity to explore the cultural history of the host country with a spirit of solidarity and friendship.

“We have some very competitive and skilled sporting residents, especially in our boules tournaments. Football may not have come home this year, but the gold medals certainly are to Sherwood Grange!”

Sherwood Grange has been designed to encourage residents to live active and fulfilling lives, while remaining as independent as possible in a safe environment. The ‘Outstanding’-rated, state-of-the-art care home features a cinema, hair salon and art studio, and incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities. The layout of the building is configured into a series of individual suites, each having a dedicated lounge/dining room, to facilitate the creation of close-knit communities.
