Going for gold – Enfield care home hosts its very own Olympics

A local care home has kicked off its own tournament in celebration of the Olympic Games.

Residents at Care UK’s Elizabeth Lodge, on Pennington Drive, brought Tokyo to Enfield with their own version of the Games.

As part of the tournament, residents competed against each other in a range of different activities, including archery, a 50-metre wheelchair race, tennis, shot put, and even a sack race for team members.

Ensuring the scene was set for an Olympic occasion, the team at Elizabeth Lodge decorated the home with flags and bunting. Following the sporting activities, the team also hosted a ceremony for the winners, complete with medals for those taking the top spots.

Residents were also encouraged to share their favourite sporting memories, Ermelinda Rodrigues said: “I loved our sports day, as it brought back so many fond memories. I spent over 50 years living in Kenya and loved watching the Kenyan team in anything they participated in.

“I was one of nine children and I was very gifted in sport. I was always the one to bring a trophy home from any event that I participated in as a youngster.”

Michelle Sampang, Home Manager at Elizabeth Lodge, said “Hosting our very own Games was a great way to encourage residents to engage in physical activity as a means of improving their physical and mental health. Here at Elizabeth Lodge, we strive to create an environment that allows individuals to live fulfilling lives, and this was a great opportunity to get the residents trying new things and taking part in past hobbies.

“We have some very competitive and skilled sporting residents, especially in the archery, everyone wanted to have a go and residents of all abilities were able to participate. It was a great afternoon for the team and residents alike!”
