It’s party thyme! Local care home residents celebrate their competition unveiling with Putney W.I

Highlighted home news

Residents at a local care home celebrated the unveiling of a new garden space with a special party with guests of honour, the Putney Women’s Institute.

Residents and the team at Care UK’s Sherwood Grange, on Robin Hood Lane, have been busy throughout the summer designing and creating a new addition for their garden which reflects the spirit of the local community and tells a story through nature.

The latest addition to the home’s garden stemmed from The Huxley Cup Competition. Created by the Women’s Institute, the competition is designed to inspire women across the country to create a greener and cleaner place to live. To enter, residents at Sherwood Grange had to first submit a mood board containing a sketch of their design, which outlined their reasoning behind the plants and materials used and provide an overview of the story behind their chosen theme.

With no time to ‘moss’ around, the team at Sherwood Grange encouraged residents to reflect on their past experiences of gardening and moments which have shaped them as individuals to help decide a theme. Everyone agreed to develop resident Stuart’s memory, who reminisced fondly about his time as a Major in the Royal Marines. Stuart travelled the world in this role which took him on many adventures, including meeting Lord Mountbatten.

With the sea playing a large part of Stuart’s memory, the team settled on a nautical theme. All the flowers chosen were red, white and blue to reflect the United Jack, while recycled materials, including pots and garden trellis, helped build a large boat structure to create a focal point in the garden. The new plants include a selection of herbs that the home will use for future meals.

Rick Mayne, Home Manager at Sherwood Grange, said: “At Sherwood Grange, we regularly find opportunities to showcase the creativity of the residents and team on a national scale. The Putney W.I enjoy a close relationship with Sherwood Grange, so we were delighted to enter their competition and welcome them to our garden for the grand unveiling of our summer project."

“It has been fantastic to see the residents coming together to work on such a fantastic initiative. This competition entry is a true reflection of the resident’s hard work, from an idea which stemmed from a previous career, to sewing fishing nets and bedding and arranging plants, we are extremely proud of everyone who has contributed."

We’re really looking forward to hearing the outcome of the competition, there were some fantastic entries, but fingers crossed we are placed among the winners – only thyme will tell!
