Epsom care home invites community to help spread festive cheer

Home news

A care home team in Epsom is gearing up to spread some festive cheer this Christmas.

Residents and team members at Care UK’s Appleby House, on Longmead Road, are inviting local people to join in with this year’s Doorstep Carols – Britain’s biggest ever carolling sing-along – on Wednesday 15th December at 6pm.

Following on from last year’s success, which saw more than 125,000 people take part, Doorstep Carols aims to inspire the nation to take to their front doors and sing-along to well-known carols and Christmas songs in unison. Streets taking part are also encouraged to use the opportunity to raise money for a charity of their choice. This year, Care UK is an official supporter of the initiative, with residents in most of its 126 homes taking part in various ways.

Having practiced their songs and learnt their lyrics, Appleby House is calling for those in the area to also head to their front doors and take part in the festive activity, in unison, at 6pm. To strengthen their choir – and appeal to a much younger audience, Appleby House has teamed up with primary school children for a socially distanced collaboration of their Christmas favourites.

Shona Bradbury, Home Manager at Appleby House: “We are so excited to be taking part in Doorstep Carols this year here at Appleby House.

“Residents and team members have spent the last few weeks perfecting their singing ahead of the event, and are looking forward to sharing this years’ festive experience with local people.

“Singing can be incredibly beneficial, especially for older people, as music and sound is closely linked to memory recall. Not only that, it’s an enjoyable, social activity which helps to create connections with others, as well as tapping into long forgotten memories which can evoke positive emotions.

“Everyone at Appleby House is looking forward to spreading some festive cheer, and we are looking forward to seeing as many local people as possible come out on their own doorsteps to join in!”

Appleby House has been designed to encourage residents to live active and fulfilling lives, while remaining as independent as possible in a safe environment. The modern care home provides full-time residential, nursing and specialist dementia care.
