The royal treatment – Newbury care homes celebrate the Platinum Jubilee in style

Home news

Residents at two care homes in Newbury have been enjoying a Platinum Jubilee celebration fit for a queen.

Care UK’s Newbury Grove, on London Road, and Winchcombe Place, on Maple Crescent, have marked the Queen’s official 70-year milestone by holding special events.

Celebrating in true British style, team members at Newbury Grove and Winchcombe Place went all out to royally decorating the gardens with Union Jack flags, bunting and balloons.

Residents at Newbury Grove gathered around the television to watch the Trooping the Colour and discussed their highlights from the parade. This was followed by a home-made royal jubilee-inspired cake, specially prepared by the home’s chef to mark the occasion.

Meanwhile, residents at Winchcombe Place enjoyed a special jubilee-themed street party, complete with a classic afternoon tea, including coronation chicken sandwiches, mini Victoria sponges, jubilee cupcakes all specially prepared for the occasion by the chef. Guests also tapped their feet to 1940s and 50s music performed by Helen Emslie, from Care Entertainment, to top off the day.

Adarsh Kurian, General Manager at Newbury Grove, said: “We had a wonderful time celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee here at Newbury Grove.

“For older people, and those living with dementia, reminiscing about key milestones, such as previous jubilee celebrations, can help bring back happy memories, as well as prompting conversation and connection with those around them. These positive feelings gained from revisiting fond memories can help decrease stress, reduce agitation, and improve mood.

Vicki Lambourne, Customer Relations Manager at Winchcombe Place, added: “We have many royalists here at Winchcombe Place, who are all keen to mark the Queen’s incredible reign and celebrate in style. Everyone had a fantastic time, and we’re already planning our next royal knees up!”
