Born to Be Wild – local care home residents' wheelie good wish comes true

Highlighted home news

A care home in Windsor has granted the wish of two of the residents by inviting a local biker group for a surprise visit – complete with eight motorbikes.

The care team at Care UK’s Mountbatten Grange, on Helston Lane, knew that 88-year-old resident, Jim Mundy and 91-year-old resident, Jack Foreman were motorcyclists in their youth, so when they expressed a wish to see motorbikes up close once again, they set out to make it happen.

The team got in touch with local biker club, Vintage Motorcycle Club in Banbury to organise a surprise visit of eight bikes for the pair to view.

On the day, eight of members from the biker club visited the homes garden and enjoyed talking to Jim and Jack about their love of motorbikes and Jim and Jack even got to try on a biker jacket.

Debbie Winwood, Home Manager at Mountbatten Grange, said: “Our Wishing Tree initiative is very popular, and it’s so rewarding to make residents wishes come true.

“Jack and Jim are well known by the care team for their shared love of motorbikes, so it was a very special moment to see their faces when they first saw the bikes riding towards the home. They were both in their element and have had a smile on their faces ever since. Thank you to Vintage Motor Cycle Club for coming to visit us!”

Jim, a resident at Mountbatten Grange, said: “It was excellent, everything about it! I loved seeing all the different bikes and meeting the bikers too – they were a very nice and friendly bunch of chaps! I loved trying on the jacket. It has been quite some time since I’ve seen a motorbike up close like that, I have got four of my own in my garage at home – they are a lot smaller than the ones that came to visit as I was an off-road biker.

“My next wish would be to do that all over again next year! It was absolutely wonderful, everything about the day was first class – the organisation, the bikes, the people and the food, I couldn't ask for anything more! Thank you to everyone involved!”

Mountbatten Grange has been designed to deliver the very best standards of care and to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives. The home provides full-time residential, nursing and dementia care, as well as short-term respite and palliative care.
