Sutton Coldfield care home helps town become dementia friendly

Home news

A care home in Sutton Coldfield is helping to create a dementia-friendly community to mark National Dementia Carers Day.

On Tuesday 13th September, from 11am-12pm, local people are invited to attend a Dementia Friends event hosted by Care UK’s Mercia Grange care home, on Lichfield Road.

The Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Friends programme is an initiative created to change people’s perceptions of dementia, raising awareness and understanding of the condition. It aims to transform the way the nation thinks, acts and talks about dementia.

Rachel Mackay, Dementia Friends Ambassador and Customer Relations Manager at Mercia Grange, will be covering a number of topics to help people understand what it is like to live with the condition. There will also be support and practical advice on what dementia is and how memories are lost, as well as useful tips on how to overcome communication barriers and discover positive approaches to living with dementia.

There will also be advice for those attending on the small things they can do to make a difference to people living with dementia in the community, as well as cake, tea and refreshments on hand for those seeking advice who would like to pop along for a friendly chat.

Rachel said: “At Mercia Grange, we are committed to encouraging others to learn about dementia, and we are really proud of the progress we have made by supporting the Dementia Friends initiative. We want to educate people, but also help the community turn their knowledge into action by making our community more aware of those living with the condition.

“We look forward to hosting this event. These sessions have proven incredibly popular in the past, so booking a place is essential.”
