Shrewsbury care home makes blooming lovely contribution to local initiative

Home news

A new Shrewsbury care home celebrated its flourishing friendship with a local charity.

Care UK’s Oxbow Manor, on Oteley Road, presented the Rotary Club of Shrewsbury with a £500 cheque towards their Polio-Free World appeal – and marked the donation with a special crocus planting session.

The purple crocus corms, which represent the Rotary Club’s fight against polio across the world, were kindly donated by the Rotary Club of Shrewsbury and planted at the home’s entrance. Once they bloom, they will be tended to by residents and team members alike when the home opens its doors in January 2023.

Margaret Thrower, President of The Rotary Club of Shrewsbury, said: “We were delighted to receive this generous donation from the team at Oxbow Manor towards our nationwide Polio-Free World appeal.

“We can’t wait to see the crocus plants bloom this spring, alongside the thousands of others we planted across the country to raise awareness of the initiative.”

Lindsey Quegan, Home Manager at Oxbow Manor, said: “We’re very pleased to be able to support the Rotary Club of Shrewsbury and their Polio-Free World appeal.

“The local organisation is deeply rooted within the community, and the work they do both nationally and internationally is nothing short of remarkable. We hope our contribution will help make a real difference and support those across the world suffering from polio.

“We’re also very grateful for the purple crocus corms. Gardening is a very calming hobby, with plenty of therapeutical benefits, especially for older people. Many Care UK homes also have their own gardening club, which we’ll no doubt try to recreate once we open our doors – so I know the flowers will be well cared for.”

Designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence, the new care home, which is set to open in January 2023, will incorporate space for hobby and leisure activities, and feature its own cinema, café and hair salon.
