Chester care home residents share pearls of wisdom with local children

Home news

Residents at a care home in Chester have been passing on their advice to the younger generation as part of a nationwide initiative.

Residents at Care UK’s Deewater Grange, on Chester Road, have been sharing life advice with team members’ children as part of a new intergenerational project – Wisdom Booths.

The Wisdom Booths initiative sees residents at Care UK homes sharing useful guidance with younger generations after a national survey found 88% of people in the UK are grateful for what they’ve been told by their elders and 56% will always rely on them for advice, regardless of how old they are.

The pearls of wisdom at Deewater Grange included 85-year-old resident Beryl Brassington’s advice to “let the sun shine through the rain”.

Sally Webster, another resident at Deewater Grange, shared a heart-warming message to “always be kind to animals”.

Corrine Clarke, who also lives at the home, commented on the day: "I think it's so important for older people to get together with the young. It's great to be able to give advice to someone as we've all lived through it and have the experience."

Sally Cooper, Home Manager at Deewater Grange, said: “Intergenerational activities are a huge part of life here at Deewater Grange, and it was fantastic to be joined by our lovely team members’ children to discuss the advice that residents would give to their younger selves.

"Intergenerational relationships have shown to be incredibly fulfilling, as they give younger and older generations a chance to learn from one another. These connections can be especially helpful for older people as they can provide a sense of purpose and spark discussions about their childhood.

"We'd like to say a huge thanks to all the children for coming along and participating, and we look forward to welcoming them into the home again very soon!"
