Drawing in a crowd! Chester care home hosts exciting art exhibition

Home news

Residents at a care home in Chester showcased their artworks for a very special evening.

The team at Care UK’s Deewater Grange, on Chester Road, opened its doors and invited family and friends to enjoy its first-ever art exhibition.

On the day, guests were able to admire pieces created by more than 20 residents at the care home. Everything on display featured a range of techniques and styles, including drawings, paintings, framed collages and crafts, all following the same theme – autumn.

The pieces on display also included breathtaking landscape paintings from resident artist 93-year-old Maurice Sutherland. Maurice, who discovered painting after he had to take time off work following an operation when he was younger, finds inspiration in the places he’s visited, which is reflected in his art – including scenic views of the Lake District.

Visitors were treated to complimentary wine and canapés in the home’s café as they discussed the resident’s impressive pieces with the friendly team at Deewater Grange.

Sally Cooper, Home Manager at Deewater Grange, said: "We have some wonderfully creative residents living here at Deewater Grange, and enjoyed a fantastic evening celebrating their talent with the Chester community.

“Creative activities play a big part of life here at Deewater Grange, and we actively encourage residents to continue lifelong hobbies – like Maurice – or try new pastimes through creative activities planned by our lifestyle team. Painting, for example, has a variety of benefits for older people, especially those living with dementia, as it provides an alternative way to communicate and express emotions, and an opportunity to relive happy memories.

“Our first-ever art exhibition was a huge success. Residents have created some amazing pieces, and we look forward to seeing what else they create in the coming months.”
