Solihull care home celebrates Oktoberfest

Home news

A local care home brought Germany to Solihull with its very own Oktokberfest celebration.

Residents at Care UK’s Blossomfield Grange, on Worcester Way, were treated to a specially crafted menu inspired by the famous folk-themed beer festival, which included pretzels and bratwurst.

In true Oktoberfest fashion, residents sampled a selection of German beers, including Patronus and Franziskaner Weissbier. Residents later learned about the history of the festival, before enjoying live music from the oompah band, Bierkeller Schunklers, who performed traditional, German songs.

To accompany the live music, the home’s catering team prepared a German inspired buffet including traditional bratwurst, sauerkraut, apple strudel, pretzels and ice-cold beer for everyone to enjoy.

Marjorie Makepeace, age 91 said: “I always enjoy Oktoberfest at Blossomfield Grange but this year the atmosphere was amazing.  It has been such a wonderful afternoon, and it was lovely to see everybody enjoying themselves”.

Jo Hopkins, Director of Community at Blossomfield Grange, said: “Everyone had a fantastic afternoon at our Oktoberfest-themed festival. The residents had a great time enjoying German cuisine and learning about the history of the festival – while dancing along to traditional German folk music.

“Here at Blossomfield Grange, we pride ourselves on creating new and exciting experiences for residents to try and this event was a testament to that. It was great to see the residents immerse themselves in a different culture and learn more about Germany’s famous Oktoberfest.

“We want to say a big thank you to Bierkeller Schunklers for coming along and making our Oktoberfest celebration one to remember. We’ll certainly be raising a glass or two again next year!”

Blossomfield Grange incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities. The home has been configured into a series of neighbourhoods to help facilitate the creation of close-knit communities and encourage social interaction among the residents.
