A care home in Sway took on a 30-mile walking challenge and raised £590 for charity.
Residents, family and team members at Care UK’s Sway Place, on Church Lane, put their best foot forward taking on the 30-mile challenge by walking a mile a day to raise funds and awareness for Dementia UK.
Members of the Nordic Brockenhurst Walking Group also joined residents and team members for the challenge. Impressively, everyone exceeded their original target by walking 44 miles.
The home raised £295 for Dementia UK, a charity dedicated to providing life-changing support and advice to those affected by dementia. Care UK donated a further £295 as part of their funding scheme, bringing the final total to £590.
Resident Shirley Crampton, aged 90, said: “It was fabulous to see everyone come together to walk the beautiful grounds, while having a chat and enjoying lots of laughter along the way. Walking is something many of us do, so this was a challenge we all wanted to take part in, while raising awareness and funds for a charity close to our hearts.”
Laura Blake, Home Admissions Advisor at Sway Place, said: “It was fantastic to see all the residents, family and team members encouraging each other to complete the challenge. The amount raised surpassed all our expectations.
“Here at Sway Place, we love supporting charities close to our hearts by raising funds in enjoyable ways. Walking is a great way to stay fit and active, especially when the steps are for a good cause. We are thrilled to be supporting Dementia UK so they can continue to provide support for those affected by dementia.
“I’d like to thank the Nordic Walking Brockenhurst Group for joining us throughout the challenge. We look forward to doing more charity fundraisers in the future.”
Designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence, Sway Place incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities. The home provides full-time residential care, dementia care and respite care. The layout of the building is configured into a series of individual suites, and 14 independent living cottages, each having a dedicated lounge/dining room to help facilitate the creation of close-knit communities.
