Dementia-friendly hairdresser brings barbershop experience to Salisbury care home

Male residents at a care home in Salisbury have received a classic barbershop experience, thanks to a visit from ‘Dementia Friendly Barbers’.

The team at Care UK’s Salisbury Manor, on Shapland Close, transformed the home’s salon into a traditional-style barbershop for the day, creating a space for residents to enjoy haircuts and conversation in a setting tailored to their needs.

Dementia Friendly Barber founders, Cordelle Cabey and Thomas Roberts, provided professional grooming services while offering an experience rooted in reminiscence and social interaction – something particularly meaningful for people living with dementia.

92-year-old resident Robert Haines said: “Thomas gave me a really good haircut and smooth shave, I need a shave like this every day! I sat and chatted with the other gents, and we reminisced about Salisbury – I really enjoyed the experience, it made me very happy.”

Following the success of the visit, Dementia Friendly Barbers will return to Salisbury Manor on a monthly basis, offering ongoing grooming sessions that help residents maintain their confidence and personal style in a relaxed, familiar environment.

Skye Williams, General Manager at Salisbury Manor, said: “For many of our residents, going to the barbers was a regular and social part of their month, and recreating that experience in a dementia-friendly way had a real impact on their wellbeing and sense of identity. The atmosphere was brilliant and it was wonderful to see so many smiles.”

“At Salisbury Manor, we are committed to enriching the lives of residents through meaningful activities and person-centred care, and partnerships like this do exactly that. We look forward to welcoming Dementia Friendly Barbers back for their next visit!”

Designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence, Salisbury Manor incorporates plenty of space for leisure activities and hobbies. The home provides full-time residential, nursing and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care, and includes its own cinema, hair and beauty salon and café. The layout of the building is configured into a series of individual suites, each having a dedicated lounge/dining room to facilitate the creation of close-knit communities.
