A care home in Sutton Coldfield has celebrated the return of Wimbledon with its own themed event.
It was tennis whites, strawberries and sunshine at Care UK’s Mercia Grange, on Lichfield Road, as residents and team members were transported to SW19 for a day of themed fun, friendly competition and nostalgic memories.
The home’s garden was transformed into a mini Centre Court, complete with decorations, sun visors and, of course, strawberries and cream. Team members took to the lawn for a series of light-hearted tennis matches, cheered on by residents.
The highlight of the event came in the form of a very special guest umpire – 94-year-old Mary Cooper, a resident at Mercia Grange and former PE teacher and tennis coach, who proudly took on the role.
Mary said: “The day was great fun. I have been teaching tennis for a long time. The team were doing great, but definitely need more practice!”
Residents enjoyed front-row seats to the matches, with music, refreshments and themed activities creating a true Wimbledon atmosphere.
Michael McNells, Home Manager at Mercia Grange, said: “We love creating events that are not only fun but also meaningful to residents. Mary was the perfect judge with her sporting background and her expertise truly shone through!
“It was great to see everyone get involved. It was a smashing day all round!”
