A care home in Edinburgh is celebrating after being recognised for its outstanding approach to palliative and end-of-life care.
Care UK’s Murrayside, on South Beechwood in Corstorphine, tasted success at the Scottish Care National Care Home Awards after judges praised the team’s commitment to supporting residents and their families with compassion and dignity.

Over the past two years, Murrayside has transformed the way it delivers end-of-life care. Team members now receive specialist training through the Gold Standards Framework, helping them to talk openly with residents and relatives about care wishes from the very beginning.
Judges highlighted the team’s thoughtful support for families, including ‘end-of-life bags’ with essentials for overnight stays and two dedicated rooms where relatives can take time for themselves. Families are also offered food and drinks and continue to receive support after their loved one has passed away.
The judges also praised Murrayside’s Namaste care, a programme specifically tailored to people living with advanced dementia. Delivered by trained carers, sessions involve gentle touch such as hand or foot massage, themed sensory activities, music therapy and opportunities to reminisce.
Suzanne Welsh, Home Manager at Murrayside, said: “We’re incredibly proud that our work to provide personalised end-of-life care has been recognised with this award. The team puts their heart into ensuring residents’ wishes are respected and families feel supported every step of the way.”
The award also recognised the home’s whole‑team approach. Colleagues from all departments, including housekeeping and catering, step in to ensure residents are never left alone.
Murrayside’s personalised care was commended too. Team members get to know each resident’s history, preferences and wishes, ensuring their final days reflect what matters most to them – from favourite music and scents to the presence of loved ones. The team has even hosted services and wakes for residents without nearby family, giving colleagues and fellow residents the chance to pay their respects.
Suzanne added: “I’d like to thank the whole team for their dedication, and the residents and families who make Murrayside such a special place. This recognition inspires us to continue building on our approach and delivering the highest-quality care.”
Murrayside care home provides full-time residential, nursing and dementia care, and has been specially designed to support residents in leading active and fulfilling lives, while also promoting independence. It incorporates plenty of space for leisure activities and hobbies, and has its own cinema, hair and beauty salon and pub.
