‘Take each day as it comes’ – Edinburgh care home centenarian reveals secret to long life

A resident at a care home in Edinburgh, celebrating a very special milestone, has shared her refreshingly straightforward advice for leading a long and happy life.

Nina Wood, who lives at Care UK’s Cairdean House on Redford Road in Colinton, marked her 102nd birthday in style with balloons, banners and a delicious birthday cake prepared by the home’s talented head chef.

She had a wonderful time surrounded by close family, fellow residents and team members – and even shared some words of wisdom.

When asked for her secret to a long and healthy life, Nina simply said: “Take each day as it comes and not plan too far ahead. Importantly, always be honest and true to yourself.”

Nina was born and raised in Brechin. Here she met and married her husband, Douglas Wood.

Throughout their marriage, Nina and Douglas often relocated for work. During the second world war, Nina worked in a bakery, managing the ration books. After the war, Nina lived in Germany for a short period, where she supported reconstruction efforts.

When they returned to Scotland, the couple eventually settled in Broughty Ferry, Dundee and went on to raise one daughter, three sons and two grandchildren.

Since moving to Cairdean House in 2023, Nina has become a much-loved resident and regularly takes part in activities such as baking.

Angela Burns, Home Manager at Cairdean House, said: “We love to throw a party and celebrate special milestones at Cairdean House – and Nina's 102nd birthday certainly called for a huge celebration!

“It was wonderful to see Nina surrounded by her loved ones and lovely to hear her share her stories, especially her secret to living a long and happy life.

“Happy birthday, Nina, and here’s to celebrating many more milestones!”

Cairdean House has been designed to deliver the very best standards of care and incorporates plenty of space for hobby and leisure activities, including a café, cinema and hair and beauty salon. The home provides full-time residential, nursing and specialist dementia care, as well as short-term respite care.
