Banbury care home hosts intergenerational crafting session

Residents at a care home in Banbury teamed up with a local school for an afternoon of sustainable crafts.

Care UK’s Highmarket House on North Bar Place, welcomed pupils from St Mary’s Church of England Primary School to mark World Recycling Day,

On the day, children and residents worked together to create an array of crafts out of recycled materials, including old bottle caps, coffee cups and cardboard boxes. The items were also painted and are now exhibited in one of the home’s activity rooms for everyone to see. To end the session on a sweet note, there was also a biscuit decorating session.

Angela Mitchell, a resident at Highmarket House, said: “I really enjoyed it, the children were so enthusiastic.

“It’s so nice to be able to spend time with them and have those opportunities.”

Later that afternoon, residents were also joined by local college students to create hedgehogs out of used books, in line with the recycling theme.

Francesca Cowley, Home Manager at Highmarket House, said: “It was a pleasure to welcome children from St Mary’s Church of England School to mark Global Recycling Day with us.

“Arts and crafts are a big part of life here at Highmarket House, as they can help residents maintain their dexterity all while expressing their creativity. It was great to see them interact with the children and share their top tips, all while learning about recycling and sustainability.

“I’d like to say a big thank you to the pupils for joining us. We can’t wait for our next crafts afternoon!”

Highmarket House is a state-of-the-art care home which provides full-time residential, nursing, dementia and short-term respite care. The care home incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities and includes its own cinema, hair salon and café.
