‘Don’t put up with nonsense!’ Crowborough centenarian shares her secret to long life

A much‑loved resident at a Crowborough care home has celebrated her 100th birthday, marking a century of memories, milestones and mischief.

Margaret Noble, who lives at Care UK’s Heather View on Beacon Road, enjoyed her new centenarian status surrounded by family, friends and fellow residents.

The home’s team organised a celebration complete with cake, refreshments and decorations, ensuring the milestone felt as meaningful as the life behind it.

When asked for her secret to a long and happy life, she added: “Don’t put up with any nonsense! And smile.”

Margaret grew up in Newcastle upon Tyne, where she later worked for the General Post Office in the telegraphic newspaper office.

It was there, as a teenager, she met her future husband, Lance. The pair married in 1949 and went on to share an incredible 65 years of marriage.

In 1966, the couple moved to Langton Green, where they brought two sons Nick and Chris into the world. Margaret is now the proud grandmother to grandchildren and great‑grandchildren, who continue to be a huge source of joy in her life.

A keen reader, Margaret still enjoys anything connected to the north-east, especially local history and newspapers. She often reminisces about her childhood in Newcastle – including one mischievous memory that has become a family favourite.

As a young girl, she was given a new coat and some money to place in the church collection box. Instead of donating the coins, she carefully picked the buttons off her coat and dropped those in instead, keeping the money for herself!

Reflecting on turning 100, Margaret said: “I feel proud and can’t believe I have lived this long.”

Sadie Hudson, Home Manager at Heather View, said: “Margaret’s 100th birthday has been a wonderful opportunity to celebrate her life and the incredible achievement of becoming a centenarian.

“She is a cherished resident here at Heather View, and it has been a privilege to share this milestone with her.

“Her positive outlook is inspiring – she’s always smiling and encourages everyone around her to do the same. Moments like this remind us why celebrating residents’ stories and achievements is so important.”

Heather View has been designed to deliver the highest standards of care, and to enable residents to lead active and fulfilling lives. The home provides full-time residential, nursing and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care, and has plenty of space for activities. Facilities at the home include a pub, a music room, a hair and beauty salon and a café.
