Halstead couple mark 60 years of marriage

A Halstead couple have celebrated a remarkable milestone – and shared their advice for a long and successful marriage.

Rose Posner, a resident at Care UK’s Colne View on Dame Mary Walk off Colchester Road, and husband George proved they are a ‘diamond couple’ when marking their 60th wedding anniversary.

The pair first met on a tennis court in Loughborough when she was 15 and he was 19. A few years later, some mutual tennis friends invited them to ‘make up the four’ for an evening out. The pair didn’t know where they were going, and to their surprise they ended up at a professional wrestling match – a memory which still makes them laugh today. It wasn’t until they later found themselves working together at Midland Bank in Loughborough that George finally plucked up the courage to ask Rose on an official first date.

The couple married at Emmanuel Church in Loughborough in 1966, enjoying a three-day honeymoon in London before later celebrating with a longer trip to Torremolinos in Spain.

While reflecting on their early days together, George said: “Rose has always been beautiful, supportive and by my side through every step of my career. Having her with me has truly been the secret to our marriage.”

Travel has always been a passion for the couple. They’ve dog-sledded in Arctic Finland in temperatures as low as -28°C, sailed the Panama Canal, visited the Falkland Islands for their 50th anniversary and enjoyed quieter breaks across Europe, Morocco and beyond.

The couple have also shared a love of theatre and community life. George spent 25 years as a Scout leader, with Rose helping as a Venture Scout leader. Even today, George continues to tend Rose’s favourite garden arrangements at the home – something she has always enjoyed.

Rose said: “Supporting each other, being there through the ups and downs and making family a priority – that’s what has kept our marriage strong. Small acts of care and shared laughter really do make a difference.”

The couple now enjoy spending time with their two daughters, Penny and Anna, and three grandchildren: Jack, 29; Ella, 27; and Phoebe, 13. They continue to cherish the memories and adventures that have shaped their life together.

Cristina Iacob, Home Manager at Colne View, said: “Rose has such a wonderful spirit and her bond with George is inspiring – it’s clear how important their relationship is to her. She brings warmth and positivity to everyone around her, and George’s visits are always full of laughter.

“Celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary is a very special moment for all of us. The care and attention they show each other is a beautiful example of lasting partnership. We’re delighted to mark this milestone with them.”
