A resident at a care home in Altrincham has taken a trip down memory lane with a pitch-perfect outing to the stadium of her favourite football club.
When the team at Care UK’s Halecroft Grange, on Hale Road in Hale Barns, heard about lifelong Manchester United fan Joan Jackson’s dream to step foot inside the iconic Old Trafford, they set about giving her the full fan experience.

Joan’s love for the Red Devils began in childhood. She regularly attended matches with her family, cheering on the team from the stands.
Decades later, the 86-year-old’s passion is still going strong and is something she shares with fellow residents and her daughter, who often joins Joan at Halecroft Grange to watch games on television. It was here that Joan expressed her desire to visit the ground in person.
As a Manchester United supporter, the care home team arranged for Joan to tour Old Trafford, allowing her to experience the excitement of being in the stadium again.
On her special day, Joan was treated to an unforgettable tour of the stadium and museum: moving through the terraces, soaking up the history and reliving treasured memories. As she looked around the museum, Joan was delighted to recognise players from her childhood, though her highlight was seeing all the medals the club has won over the years.
Joan said: “I enjoyed the whole experience. I loved going into the changing rooms and being led out down the tunnel to the ground, just like the players!”
Joan’s experience was part of Care UK’s Wishing Tree initiative, in which each care home encourages residents to put forward their dreams, allowing them to reconnect with a past hobby or try something completely new.
Suzanna Sumegi, Home Manager at Halecroft Grange, said: “We are always looking for ways to make residents’ wishes come true. Every time a game is on, Joan can be found cheering on United, so when she expressed her dream to visit Old Trafford, we had to make it a reality.
“Joan was over the moon to be back at the stadium and loved having the opportunity to make her way through the players’ tunnel and onto the pitch. Seeing the beaming smile on her face throughout the trip was truly priceless, and it was wonderful to make another meaningful memory for her.
“A big thank you to the club and the brilliant team at Halecroft Grange for making the day so special. It was a joy to be part of it.”
Designed to enable residents to lead active and fulfilling lives, while also promoting independence, Halecroft Grange incorporates plenty of space for hobby and leisure activities, including a café, hair and beauty salon and pub. The building has been configured into a series of neighbourhoods to facilitate the creation of close-knit communities and encourage social interaction among the residents.
