Basingstoke care home resident’s love for fishing rekindled

A resident at a care home in Basingstoke has cast his line once more as he returned to the lake.

When the team at Care UK's Dashwood Manor, on Bradley Way, learned Terry Woodnott was a lifelong fishing fanatic, they knew they had to reunite him with his passion.

After becoming hooked on the sport as a youngster, Terry continued to hone his skills throughout his life, finding great pleasure in teaching his daughter, Claire, his favourite hobby.

When dementia made it harder for Terry to get out on the water, his time by the lake became less frequent. But the care team recognised how much fishing meant to him and helped him return to the peaceful place he loves.

They took Terry, aged 80, for a sunny afternoon at Billhook Lake, where he reeled in a range of impressive catches such as a large bream. He reminisced with the care team about fond memories and past fishing experiences.

Terry said: “It is nice to be out by the lake, just watching and looking at the water.

Terry’s experience was made possible thanks to Care UK’s Wishing Tree initiative, which encourages residents to suggest ideas for new hobbies they’d like to try, places they’d like to visit or even activities linked to past careers. From skiing trips to a fish and chip supper, the programme is designed to help residents lead fulfilling lives.

Francine Veramu, Home Manager at Dashwood Manor, said: “Our trip was a picture-perfect day by the water and it was great to see Terry in his element. There’s no doubt we’ll still be talking about it for weeks to come.

“Here at Dashwood Manor, we always encourage residents to continue their favourite pastimes and share memories that hold special importance to them. It’s moments like this that show just how crucial it is to keep their passions alive.

“We’re so pleased we were able to organise this trip for Terry – hopefully we can experience many more days like this soon.”

Dashwood Manor provides full-time residential, nursing and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care. The home incorporates plenty of space for hobby and leisure activities, with luxury facilities including a hair and beauty salon, cinema, bar and gardens.
