A local resident has won a competition to help name Fareham’s newest care home.
Mel Preston-Green took part in a contest to come up with a name for the new multi-million-pound Care UK home on Wallington Hill, which is set to open to residents in summer 2027 and provide premium residential, dementia, nursing and respite care for 82 older people.

The competition called for the people who know Fareham the best – its residents – to share suggestions that had cultural or historical references to the town.
Mel, came up with ‘Wallington Place’, taking inspiration from the area, the home is being built on.
She said: “I chose the name Wallington Place because I wanted to reflect the home’s location on Wallington Hill. The word ‘Place’ feels welcoming. It suggests more than just a building; it represents a home and a community, somewhere residents can enjoy.
“It’s lovely to see more dementia care homes being built, as I know how important they are for people living with the condition and for their families. I’d like to wish the residents and team all the very best in their new home.”
As a reward for coming up the winning name, Care UK gifted Mel a £250 prize.
Wallington Place will incorporate luxury facilities such as a cinema, bar and hair and beauty salon, as well as secure and wheelchair-friendly landscaped outdoor space that will include sensory gardens, water features and seating to give residents the opportunity to spend quality time outdoors.
Justin Daley, Development Project Manager for Care UK, said: “The naming process is one of the key milestones for a new home, so it was important to involve the community in the decision.
“We received some amazing suggestions. The area has a rich history, and while it was hard to pick a winner, we felt ‘Wallington Place’ really rooted the home in the local area.
“We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who entered, and to Mel for her suggestion – we’re looking forward to the home taking shape and opening in 2027.”
Designed to enable residents to lead active and fulfilling lives, while also promoting independence, the new Care UK home in Fareham will incorporate plenty of space for leisure activities and hobbies. The layout of the building will be configured into a series of individual suites, each having a dedicated lounge/dining room to facilitate the creation of close-knit communities.
