A Suffolk care home resident has marked her 100th birthday with a celebratory glass of white wine – something she credits as her secret to living a long life.
There were plenty of smiles as Florence Young, who lives at Care UK's Hartismere Place on Castleton Way, was surrounded by banners, balloons and homemade cupcakes prepared by the home’s head chef.
Affectionately known as Flossy, the new centenarian enjoyed celebrating alongside friends and fellow residents. She was delighted to receive a congratulatory card from the king to mark the special occasion.
Reflecting on her day, Florence said: “When I opened my card, I had to read it twice because I couldn't believe that it was from the king – I will always treasure it.”
When asked the secret to reaching 100, Flossy replied: “Maybe it’s the wine that’s made me live this long!”
Born in Battersea, Flossy later moved to Feltham after the second world war, where she worked in an army laundry alongside her best friend. She has fond memories of waving to American soldiers as a teenager, who would throw sweets and chocolate back in response.
Flossy married John in 1948, borrowing her sister’s wedding dress for the occasion. John worked as a builder, and together the couple enjoyed spending summers in their garden, where Flossy loved growing vegetables.
A keen traveller and wine enthusiast, Flossy even spent time living in France and discovering new wines. She was also an avid reader and lifelong knitter and today loves spending time with family and friends.
Rebecca Calver, Home Manager at Hartismere Place, said: “We had so much fun celebrating Flossy’s 100th birthday. It was a wonderful day and seeing her surrounded by the people who care most about her made it even more special.
“Flossy is a much-loved member of our community. She has lived such a fascinating life and always has wonderful stories to share, so it was a privilege to honour this incredible milestone with her.”
