Kidderminster care home travels through time with Whovian-themed convention

A care home in Kidderminster has stepped into the Tardis for a day as it opened its doors for a special Doctor Who-themed event.

Care UK’s Brook Court, on Oldnall Road, was transported through time and space when the team organised a unique experience inspired by resident Richard Mortan’s lifelong passion for the iconic sci-fi series.

They welcomed Doctor Who expert Nigel Parkes, who spoke about the history of the show, brought in life-sized props including Daleks and Cybermen and hosted a quiz to put guests' knowledge to the test.

Residents and visitors enjoyed reminiscing about their favourite episodes and characters while learning little-known facts about the television show.

Richard, who has been a Whovian since he was a child, said: “The event made me feel overjoyed and brought me right back to my childhood. I've always loved Doctor Who.

“My favourite doctors are John Pertwee and Tom Baker. It was great speaking to someone who feels so passionate about Doctor Who and has such a collection of one-of-a-kind BBC props.

“The fact my fellow residents enjoyed the event as well made the event all the better. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

The visit was made possible thanks to Care UK’s Wishing Tree initiative, which encourages residents to suggest ideas for new hobbies they’d like to try, places they’d like to visit or even activities linked to past careers. From flying a plane to enjoying a fish and chip supper, no wish is too big or small for the team to try to grant.

Emma Metzger-Minns, Home Manager at Brook Court, said: “Bringing the convention-style experience to Richard, who has been unable to travel due to health reasons, and making his wish come true was incredibly special.

“Nigel was fantastic. His stories had everyone captivated and residents, families and local Whovians were completely drawn in, laughing, reminiscing and soaking up every behind-the-scenes secret he shared.

“The Daleks and Cybermen were real showstoppers. The room was filled with joy, surprise and excitement as these iconic characters came to life right in front of us. A big thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the day so memorable.”

Brook Court is a state-of-the-art care home that provides full-time residential, nursing and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care. It features 67 en-suite bedrooms and has been designed to enable residents to lead active and fulfilling lives, while also promoting independence. The building incorporates plenty of space for hobby and leisure activities.
