Woking care home centenarian shares secret to long life

A resident at a care home in Woking celebrating a special milestone has given his refreshingly straightforward advice for leading a long and happy life.

Ron Nolan, who lives at Care UK’s Greenview Hall on Streets Heath in West End, marked his 102nd birthday with balloons, gifts and a delicious cake made by the home’s head chef.

The centenarian was surrounded by friends and family at his special party – and he even shared some words of wisdom.

When asked for his secret to a long and healthy life, Ron replied: “Keep smiling and enjoy the small things. Oh, and a good breakfast helps!”

Born in Wiltshire, Ron spent most of his life living in Horsell, where he is still remembered fondly and recognised at the remembrance service at the local church, St Mary’s Church.

At 18, he joined the army where he served for 12 years, including through World War II, honoured with medals that still hold great meaning for him.

When he met his partner Joan in his younger days, they married shortly after. The couple were together for many years before Joan passed away, leaving behind a son, Martin, grandson, Steven, and twin great-grandchildren.

A lifelong football fan, Ron played in his youth for the Horsell team and has always supported Arsenal, enjoying going to watch many games when he was younger.

Known for his cheeky smile and love of breakfast, Ron spends his days socialising with his friends. He is always keen to join in with group activities and draw on his army training to lend a hand.

Ron said: “I loved my birthday cake and all the attention from the staff and residents!”

Meera Govindapillai, Home Manager at Greenview Hall, said: “Ron’s 102nd birthday was a true celebration of his remarkable life. He always has so many amazing stories to share about his experiences during the war and is a much-loved member of the family here.

“At Greenview Hall, we aim to ensure residents continue to lead active and fulfilling lives. Coming together to organise a day full of excitement and joy to mark this major milestone was a real pleasure. Cheers to Ron!”

Greenview Hall provides full-time residential, nursing and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care. The home incorporates plenty of opportunities for hobbies and leisure activities, while the layout of the building has been configured into a series of individual suites, each having a dedicated lounge/dining room to facilitate the creation of close-knit communities.
