Chelmsford care home resident celebrates milestone birthday

A Chelmsford care home resident has celebrated her 103rd birthday in style, surrounded by friends and fellow residents.

Elizabeth ‘Betty’ McWhirr marked the milestone at Care UK’s Manor Lodge, on Manor Road. With a remarkable 54-year career as a dental nurse behind her, Betty has certainly given plenty of people a reason to smile over the years.

Born in Northumberland to parents Jessie and James, Betty grew up with her four siblings. Her father, James, was a station master, before Betty later moved to Edinburgh to begin her own career in healthcare.

Betty worked as a dental nurse both at a school and in private practice, eventually spending an impressive 54 years working at the school before retiring.

Away from work, Betty enjoyed life’s simple pleasures, including reading, completing crosswords and getting out for walks in the fresh air. With a love of a good crossword, she has always enjoyed keeping her mind active and tackling a tricky clue – something she continues to do today.

Betty never married and shared a particularly close bond with her sister, Olive. The sisters lived together for many years, and Olive was also a resident at Manor Lodge, meaning they were able to enjoy precious time together at the care home.

Speaking about her special day, Betty said: “I had a lovely day with my family and friends and have been spoilt rotten.”

Natasha Webster, Home Manager at Manor Lodge, added: “Birthdays are always special – and reaching 103 is certainly something worth celebrating! Betty is such a lovely presence in the home, and it was fantastic to see her enjoying her special day with the people around her. There was plenty of laughter and reflecting on all the wonderful memories she has made over the years.

“We feel very lucky to have her as part of the Manor Lodge family and hope her 103rd year brings her lots more happy moments, and perhaps a few crossword clues she hasn’t already cracked!”
