Edinburgh care home honours VJ Day

A care home in Edinburgh has marked the end of the second world war with a day of special events.

On 15th August 1945, Japan surrendered to Allied forces, finally ending the war. This emotional news sparked celebrations across the world, with people taking to the streets for spontaneous parties across the globe.

To commemorate this poignant anniversary of VJ Day, Care UK’s Cairdean House in Colinton welcomed soldiers from Dreghorn Barracks into the Redford Road home.  

They joined members of the community for a full day of celebrations, starting with a coffee morning to reflect on war stories and experiences over a hot drink and cake.

Resident Marion Dunlop said: “It was so wonderful to meet the soldiers, have a cuppa and chat together. It was so kind of them to take the time to visit.” 

In the afternoon, entertainer Leona Corio joined the celebrations and filled the home with classic wartime music. Visitors and soldiers from Dreghorn Barracks enjoyed a selection of food and drinks, prepared by the home’s head chef. 

Resident David Burnett said: “The singer Leona was fabulous! My visitors and I thoroughly enjoyed the entertainment!”

Angela Burns, Home Manager at Cairdean House, added: “This is an incredibly important anniversary for many residents, and we wanted to honour those who and whose families were involved in VJ Day. 

“We encourage activities that include reminiscing as it can stimulate memories of cherished times. We want to thank those who shared their experiences and helped us celebrate such a significant moment in history.”
