Framlingham care home resident takes centre stage to fulfil lifelong singing dream

A Framlingham care home resident was given the chance to fulfil her childhood music dream of performing in front of a live audience.

81-year-old Linda Tye, a resident at Care UK’s Mills Meadow, on Fore Street, was born deaf and was taught to lipread by her brother. Her hearing returned when she was nine years old, and Linda has loved singing ever since, always dreaming of one day performing on stage.

Linda’s dream recently became a reality when she was invited to take to the stage at the Seagull Theatre in Lowestoft, where she performed ‘The Wonder of You’ by Elvis Presley alongside singer Steven Hall, who regularly visits Mills Meadow to entertain residents.

For Linda, stepping into the spotlight was a particularly special moment, giving her the opportunity to share something she has loved throughout her life with a live audience.

Reflecting on her experience, Linda said: “I have wanted to be on stage singing since I was small and it was marvellous, a dream come true!

“I was shaking from head to toe with nerves but I blooming well did it. I cried when I got a standing ovation.”

Linda’s experience was made possible thanks to Care UK’s Wishing Tree initiative, which encourages residents to suggest ideas for new hobbies they’d like to try, places they’d like to visit or even activities linked to past careers. From skiing to a fish and chip supper, the programme is designed to help residents lead active and fulfilling lives. 

Julie Wallace, Home Manager at Mills Meadow, said: “Linda has always had such a passion for singing, so seeing her have the opportunity to perform on a real stage was incredibly special. It was clear just how much the moment meant to her, and she certainly embraced every second of being in the spotlight.

“We’re incredibly proud of Linda for taking to the stage and sharing her love of singing with everyone – she proved that it’s never too late to follow a dream, and we can’t wait to see where her musical talents take her next!”

Mills Meadow is a modern care home providing full-time residential and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care. The team also operates a day centre, which is open to the community throughout the week. Designed to enable residents to lead active and fulfilling lives, the home has its own cinema, café and hair and beauty salon, and there is plenty of space – both indoors and out – for relaxation and recreation.
