Former lorry driver fulfils wish

A retired lorry driver took a ride down memory lane when his wish to visit a HGV show came to life.

91-year-old Peter Searson, who lives at Care UK’s Samuel House, on Porterwood Drive, was treated to a visit to the British Truck Championships, an annual celebration of trucking bringing together the road transport community.

Peter was introduced to the world of HGVs from a young age through his family’s haulage company in Langley Mill. Growing up, he watched his father behind the wheel and was inspired to follow in his footsteps by becoming a driver himself.

At just 16 years old, Peter began working for the family business as a driver before eventually taking over the company at the age of 20, where he remained until his retirement at 67.

On the day of the visit, Peter was in his element exploring the various types of lorries and discussing their characteristics with fellow truck enthusiasts. He was also able to watch the flagship truck race, bringing back fond memories of his own time behind the wheel.

Commenting on the visit, Peter Searon, 91, said: “I had a fantastic day, and loved looking at all the lorries and seeing them racing. They looked just like the ones I used to drive. A very lovely day, thank you!”

Peter’s experience was made possible thanks to Care UK’s Wishing Tree initiative, which encourages residents to suggest ideas for new hobbies they’d like to try, places they’d like to visit or even activities linked to past careers. From skiing to a fish and chip supper, the programme is designed to help residents lead fulfilling lives.

Lisa Tungate, Home Manager at Samuel House, said: “Seeing Peter surrounded by the lorries and his smile throughout the experience was incredibly special for everyone involved.

“Our Wishing Tree initiative is a wonderful way for residents to divulge their ambitions, and it’s hugely rewarding to be able to make these a reality. Lorries are something he has always been passionate about, and we wanted to make sure he could experience that excitement again in a safe and meaningful way.

“The whole day was unforgettable, and it was wonderful to see Peter enjoying every moment.”

Samuel House is a state-of-the-art care home which provides full-time residential and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care.
