26 March 2010: A Chelmsford care home that uses pioneering techniques to help its residents stay healthy and active celebrated its first birthday this week.
Residents at Care UK’s Manor Lodge celebrated a successful first year with an indoor street party, singers, entertainers, karaoke and lots of party atmosphere.
“Home manager, Bernard Mawayo said: “It was a wonderful day. Our, local MP, Simon Burns described Manor Lodge as a centre of excellence during his visit.
“Hard work by the staff and volunteers enabled the residents to enjoy this special day which was marked by a huge birthday cake and daylong fun and laughter.”
Manor Lodge provides residential and nursing care for 120 residents with a specialist 20-bed dementia unit and facilities which include a hairdresser’s, café and cinema.
What sets Manor Lodge apart is its dedicated staff who, residents say, will always go the extra mile to ensure that are not only comfortable but doing things they enjoy.
Bernard said “At Care UK we design individual care programmes to ensure that residents can stay as fulfilled and independent as possible after moving into Manor Lodge.
“Each resident is supported to carry on doing the leisure activities and household tasks they loved in more active times.
”We have specially raised flower beds, which were donated in the memory of a former resident. These are perfect for allowing people who love gardening to carry on with their favourite activity.”
Manor Lodge holds many classes and activities including exercise and flower arranging classes, skittles, bingo and quizzes. On movie nights, the residents particularly love western and romances, while the cinema is also very popular with the football fans who meet up in the room to watch the big matches.
And the coming year is set to be as successful as the first, with the opening of a sensory room that includes relaxation, a bubble machine and music to relax and stimulate the residents’ senses.
