NHS Porter Praised for Patient Care

Company news

A Gillingham-based hospital porter has been recognised for his commitment to reassuring and supporting patients undergoing cataract operations with a national award.

John Sinclair-Thomas has worked at the Will Adams NHS Treatment Centre, run by Care UK, since 2008 and has volunteered to personally sit with cataract patients throughout their procedures. In particular, he offers his support to anxious patients who are nervous about the procedure. John also takes responsibility for ensuring consultants’ needs are catered for in theatre, to create a relaxed, hygienic and stress-free environment for all involved in a cataract operation.

His dedication and empathy for patients has been recognised with the Customer Care award as part of Care UK’s annual awards for its best performing independent health centres and healthcare professionals.

As well as portering duties, John undertakes a number of important support roles at the centre including providing assistance to the clinical supplies manager, stocktaking, managing charge sheets and assisting with deliveries and equipment transportation.

“I’m absolutely delighted to win this award,” said John Sinclair-Thomas. “Many of our patients are elderly and can often be very nervous about their cataract procedures. It’s great to know that we can offer them some simple comfort and reassurance before, during and after their treatment. I hadn’t expected to learn how to scrub up for the operating theatre when I took on the porter role, but it’s wonderful to be able to be so involved with the procedures which can often transform a patient’s life.”

“I can think of no one more deserving than John to win this award. His demeanour not only radiates a caring empathy and understanding, but he has a humanity and humility about his persona that puts his patients at ease,” said Jane Higgins, general manager, Will Adams NHS Treatment Centre. “The care that John shows on a daily basis underpins the support and positive experience for patients that is core to everything we do at the centre.”
