Southampton NHS Treatment Centre is taking an innovative approach to remind staff and patients of the importance of excellent hygiene practices, both at home and at work.
To tie in with International Infection Awareness Week, staff and patients at Southampton NHS Treatment Centre will take part in a number of themed initiatives including a quiz, using a UV Glow box to monitor hand cleanliness and there will be a talk on aseptic non touch technique (ANTT) by a colleague from University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust. Also, the Infection Prevention lead in each ward / department at the Centre will be producing an information display for staff and patients to view in their area and staff have all been asked to sign a giant hand display to committ to the centre's hand hygiene pledge.
As well as helping to stop the spread of viral illnesses, such as flu or norovirus (vomiting bug), the campaign hopes to remind patients of the importance of good hygiene, particularly as they recover from minor operations.
Southampton NHS Treatment Centre, run by Care UK, has an excellent record for cleanliness, receiving high praise from patient feedback on hygiene levels and having an excellent record on the prevention of MRSA and C-Difficile.
“Maintaining a high level of hygiene is important for all of us, particularly in the winter months, when viral illnesses can quickly spread through a home or workplace,” said Claire Evennett, the Centre’s Infection Prevention and Control Nurse. “It’s even more important for people who have undergone surgery, however minor, as their immune levels may be lower than usual.
“Our week of activities is designed to keep cleanliness front of mind for both staff and patients with plenty of fun, light-hearted activities that will ensure the message comes across loud and clear.”
The centre has also created a set of ‘Winter Wellness’ tips, designed to help people stop the spread of germs and viruses during the predicted cold winter. The tips are available by clicking here
