Station House care home celebrates Dignity Action Day

Home news

Residents at Care UK’s Station House nursing home in Crewe celebrated the national Dignity in Action campaign with a week of events including some tasty treats.

Dignity Action Day aims to ensure people in care are treated as individuals, are given choice, control and a sense of purpose in their daily lives and offered stimulating activities. Station House Manager Sarah Evans said: “We are passionate about residents’ dignity and the key to maintaining dignity is giving people genuine choices and giving them the opportunities to try new things as well as keeping up the hobbies and interests they love.”

On Monday 30th January the week of celebration began with an exhibition of some of the residents’ ‘New Beginnings’ books, which individually chronicle the experiences of the people living at Station House. Sarah said: “’New Beginnings’ books are inspiring as they capture how the resident sees themselves, their world and their interests and activities.

“It is a privilege for us to share those thoughts and ideas with them and I think visitors to the home will find them entertaining and inspiring. They show that life may change when you live in long term care, but it does not stop.”

On Wednesday 1st February staff, residents and their relatives planted hanging baskets and pots with spring bulbs. Sarah said: “Gardening is a favourite with so many of our residents. They have had gardens and allotments and they bring all that experience into our gardening club -that results in some stunning displays in our raised flower beds and accessible patios.”

On Friday 3rd February staff baked cakes, against the clock, to be judged by the gardening club, with the winner receiving a prize.
