Residents, the team at Care UK’s Ventress Hall care home in Darlington and relatives from across the country gathered together to help celebrate a very special birthday.
Ventress Hall resident Evelyn Chidgey celebrated her 100th birthday with friends at the Trinity Road home as well as many members of her extended family, who travelled across the country to be with her for the big day.
Team member Sarah Waggitt, who works closely with Mrs Chidgey said: “Evelyn is a wonderful lady. She left home to do her bit during the Second World War and she travelled throughout the UK as a plane spotter, watching the skies for enemy aircraft and feeding through the information to the gun positions and HQ.
“After the war, she moved down to London to find work. She took an exam and became a telephonist with the Post Office in 1947 and she has told me about the famous people she spoke during her working life, such as Margaret Lockwood and John Mills.
Mrs Chidgey married her husband, Norman, in 1961 and they were married for nearly 50 years before he passed away. Sarah says Mrs Chidgey puts her long life and good health down to “a very happy marriage, good food and always looking after herself.”
