Appleby House and the Orchard Day Club’s teams came together with experts from across the industry for a celebration of the UK’s best care work.
The teams were selected as finalists at the National Dementia Awards, in recognition of their commitment to providing residents and day club visitors with excellent care.
Headed up by home manager Jeni Rushton and day club manager Elaine Carruthers, the teams at the home provide specialist residential, nursing, palliative and respite care for older people, including those with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia.
The teams were finalists in the Best Dementia Team category, which recognised the dedication they had shown to learning more about the challenges faced by people living with dementia.
In nominating them, regional director Karen Seabrook said: “They have embraced Care UK’s experiential training, which gives a greater insight into how people with dementia experience life by having their own senses impaired. As a result, they have developed incredible levels of empathy and understanding with the residents.”
Carers at the home and day club focus on organising lots of events for residents and visitors and have worked hard to create a homely atmosphere.
Speaking after the event, Jeni said the teams had been delighted to be nominated and to have made it to the final.
“Just being nominated for an award is great recognition for all the hard work the team at Appleby House and the Orchard Day Centre put into everything they do.
“We are determined to ensure that residents and visitors to the day club have good experiences with us and continue to lead fulfilled lives, whatever challenges they face. We were amongst great company in the other nominees and this has inspired us to do even better next time!”
