Horsing racing, a quiz and a sing-along to raise money for dementia charity

A Stowmarket care home is inviting visitors to make time for a cuppa next Thursday to support a national dementia awareness campaign.

Residents at Care UK’s Wade House home, in Violet Hill Road, decided they wanted to support the Time for a Cuppa campaign and, together with their team of activities coordinators and care workers, have organised a day of fun on March 7.

Home Manager Karen Curle said:  “We specialise in caring for older people with dementia and the work of Dementia UK is relevant to everyone’s lives, in the community and in residential care settings, which is why we are all supporting this worthwhile campaign.

“We will have leaflets from the charity and other dementia organisations available and members of our team will be on hand to answer questions from visitors who may want to know more or who may be caring for someone with dementia in their own home.”

Residents at Wade House will be getting the day underway at 11am, with a DVD horse racing game called Newmarket.

The fun, which is open to all, continues in the afternoon with a general knowledge quiz at 2pm and then at 4pm, accordionist Heather Bexan, who is one of the residents’ favourite entertainers, will lead a sing-along of favourite songs – and of course there will be plenty of tea and biscuits on offer too.

To mark Time for a Cuppa week, Care UK, a leading provider of health and social care services throughout the country, commissioned an independent survey into the nation’s tea-drinking habits.

The survey found that people around the UK place great value on the benefits of meeting friends and family for a cuppa and to share news – a view shared by 76% of people in the South East.

People in the region also named The Queen, The Duchess of Cambridge and Sir Winston Churchill as famous names they would most like to share a cuppa with.

Sharing family news over a cuppa was also top choice for adults around the UK, with nearly 75% saying it was their favourite way to share family news and events and 51% of over 55s opting for their children as the favourite people to make time for a cuppa and a chat with.
