Scottish homes make the first National Care Home Open Day a success

Home news

Friday June 21 saw a nationwide celebration of all that is best in residential care as homes opened to the public for the first National Care Home Open Day - and in Scotland we were keen to join in.

At Cairdean House in Colinton, Edinburgh, visitors took part in card-making and collage workshops and tried their hand at making the traditional Scottish delicacy tablet. Outdoors, in our grounds, there was bowling, putting, garden darts and quoits for the more sporting. We were also joined by our local school and church choirs who stayed to shop at our stalls.

At Care UK’s Caledonian Court home, in Larbert, visitors enjoyed an afternoon of home baking as we also officially opened our new café area.

Home Manager Catherine Brannan said: “We are confident that the new café will become a hub for our home and it was wonderful to welcome people into it for the first time on National Care Home Open Day.”

At Wellmeadow Lodge in Newtown Mearns near Glasgow, visitors enjoyed a summer bazaar and were kept busy looking at the wide range of stalls featuring residents' arts and crafts, handmade jewellery, garden herb plaques and tomato plants.

And at Cathkin House, in Nerston, visitors also got the chance to sample strawberry cream teas and enjoy a browse among the craft stalls.

As well as showing visitors around our homes we also gave away copies of the brand new book As Easy As ABC: Care UK’s Top 100 Hints and Tips for Activity Based Care. If you would like to learn more about ABC and how it can improve older people’s independence and wellbeing you can download it from www.careuk.com.
