Our day of help and support wins praise from carers

With the help of a national expert, we recently held a special event to give practical advice and support to people in the local community caring for loved ones with dementia, and we were delighted at how much they felt the day had helped.

Around 15 people joined us and more came throughout the sessions which, by popular demand, carried on way past our intended timetable.

We were joined for the day by James Wilson, who lectures in Mental Health at Southampton University and specialises in the effects of dementia and managing aggression. Our Manager Allison Purkiss said: “We all knew that James was a national expert in the field, but we had no idea he was such a captivating speaker.

“He literally had relatives and professional carers on the edge of their seats. He had us laughing out loud, as well as giving us lots of useful information and a truly new insight into the way people with dementia experience the world.”

There was also a popular question and answer session with Care UK’s regional dementia nurse Rose Elliott, who shared many of the tips she has learnt during her years working with people with dementia as well as professionally researching the condition.

Allison said: “The feedback cards were very positive about the advice and information people received and we were all delighted to be able to share some of our ideas and experience and show people that they are not alone.”
