Free dementia advice for High Wycombe carers

Home news

At Catherine Court, experts in dementia care will be offering advice to people caring for loved ones at a free event on Friday 27th September.

The event will run from 10.30am to 3.30pm and carers will be able to hear talks from experts on dementia care, as well as having the chance to book one-to-one sessions with our dementia nurse.

As well as guest speakers from the Alzheimer’s Society, there will be a chance to hear and talk to Care UK’s national expert on Activity Based Care, Deirdre Timney.

Home administrator Claire Styles said: “We know that the more a person can be engaged in activities they enjoy, as well as day–to-day activities, the longer they can retain their life skills and independence. Deirdre and Care UK’s activities coordinators have written a book called As Easy as ABC, which gives 100 tried and tested activities that families can do with their loved one that are fun and increase their relative’s overall wellbeing. The book will be available free to all those attending the seminar.”

There will also be a talk from Rose Elliot, Care UK’s dementia specialist nurse, about any specific concerns people have for their loved ones, and one-to-one sessions will be available.

Claire said: “Caring for a relative with dementia can be stressful. As the condition progresses, the person perceives the world very differently. This can cause them alarm and distress, but they can often struggle to communicate what they are experiencing.

“We hope this event will give relatives some very practical ideas that will reduce stress and increase their loved one’s contentedness and wellbeing, as well as showing the carers that they are not alone.”

Anyone wishing to join the free dementia information day can contact Claire on 01494 524850 or email Claire.styles@careuk.com.

For anyone unable to attend the event, the booklet As Easy as ABC is free to download from www.careuk.com.
