Care praised as second to none in Stanmore care home

Care UK’s Woodland Hall care home, in Stanmore, has been given the seal of approval by a national care watchdog after the inspectors heard that care at the home was “second to none.”

At an unannounced visit by the Care Quality Commission, inspectors heard comments from residents and visitors including: "The staff are fantastic, I can't fault them, they are absolutely wonderful" and "Any concerns are taken on board immediately."

The inspectors examined the home and its records on December 2 last year and interviewed team members, residents and relatives before announcing that the home meets the Government’s five standards of quality and safety which are:

  • Treating people with respect and involving them in their care;
  • Providing care, treatment & support that meets people's needs;
  • Caring for people safely & protecting them from harm;
  • Staffing and
  • Management.

During the visit to the home that specialises in dementia, rehabilitation and nursing care, the inspectors also heard praise from residents’ relatives saying “Staff talk to people, they treat them as individuals," and “The care here is second to none.”

Home manager Kumaree Juggapah said: “I was delighted to read the report. We talk to residents and relatives all the time to get their input into their care and the running of the home, but it is so nice to see the lovely comments they passed on to the inspectors.”

During the inspection the CQC team checked to ensure staff offered residents choices and respected the decisions that they made. Residents told them that they had a choice of meals and that they were asked for their consent about care.

The inspectors examined individuals’ care plans, which were found to contain information about their preferences and needs including communication, religious, social and health and care needs as well as guidance about how people's needs, such as pressure care, moving and handling and dementia needs, were met by staff.

The inspectors also highlighted that residents were provided with the support that they needed to access a range of healthcare and social care services, which included doctors, opticians, audiologists, psychologists, dieticians and chiropodists, as well as appointments with a GP who regularly visits the home.

Kumaree said: “All the team believe in giving residents the level of treatment they would like their own families to receive, so they always ensure that they do whatever they can to ensure every resident has what they need to be happy, healthy and engaged in the life of the home.”
