Day of Dementia Support at Cheltenham Care Home

Home news

Care UK is hosting a series of free Experiencing Dementia seminars on Wednesday 23 April at its Sandfields care home on St. George’s Road in Cheltenham.

Mark Harrison, dementia specialist trainer at Care UK, will be leading a seminar specially tailored to healthcare professionals, from 10.30am to midday.  The session will bring together professional carers who stand to benefit from learning more about dementia and the latest approaches to activity based care.

From 2.30pm to 4pm, Mark will then head up a seminar designed to provide practical guidance and support for those caring for a loved one or a friend living with dementia.  Mark will be discussing the realities of dementia, and discussing coping mechanisms and tactics for dealing with the condition’s associated behaviours.

At both seminars, attendees will have the opportunity to take part in exercises that simulate the effects of dementia to help them gain a deeper understanding of the condition. Afterwards, Mark will be on hand to answer any questions, and there will be an opportunity for members of the public to meet the carers at Sandfields over breakfast or afternoon tea.

Elizabeth Miles, customer relations manager for Care UK, explained why she is opening the doors to Sandfields for the day of Experiencing Dementia seminars. “With an ageing population, it is estimated that by 2021, one million people in the UK will be living with dementia.

At Care UK, we understand being armed with plenty of expert advice and information can make all the difference – whether you are a healthcare professional or you are caring for a friend or loved one.  By hosting a series of free seminars, we can ensure this information is communicated clearly and concisely.

“We are looking forward to extending a warm welcome to Sandfields on Wednesday, and to giving visitors the opportunity to speak directly to the professionals in this area as well as team members from the care home.”

Dementia affects 820,000 people in the UK and 25 million people have a close friend or family member living with the condition. Many of Care UK’s care home residents are living with various stages of dementia and the care home operator offers extensive dementia training programs for all staff members to ensure residents receive the highest quality care.

Sandfields is a state-of-the-art care home which provides full time residential, nursing and dementia care, as well as short term respite care.  Designed to enable its residents to live enjoyable and fulfilling lives, the care home has its very own cinema and hairdressers, and there is plenty of space both indoors and out for relaxation and recreation.

Each of the 90 bedrooms has its own ensuite wet room, a flat-screen television, adjustable profile bed, and access to a 24-hour nurse call system.
