Singing raises the roof at Ponteland Manor

Home news

Residents at Ponteland Manor have been rediscovering the joy of music and singing now resounds from the home every Thursday afternoon!

The singing sessions were the brainwave of Ponteland degree student Cathryn Anderson, who is studying Community Music at the Sage in Gateshead.

Cathryn said: “It’s fabulous, everyone joins in and they enjoy such a range of music.  It is a very uplifting experience and a joy to see the smiles on everyone’s faces.”

Home manager David Bell said: “Music can be a powerful means of communicating for people whose condition makes communicating thoughts and emotions difficult.”

The sessions have not only been fun but they have also increased the wellbeing of residents, particularly those with advanced dementia.  Relatives have also joined in with the singing and it is moving to see how the music can join them together when dementia has taken away communication and memories.

Cathryn has now helped residents form a choir (up to 18 residents), and they are practising to entertain others with their songs.  Home manager, David Bell and the home’s activities coordinator Lynne Niven are now working with Cathryn to arrange performances for the choir.
