Chris and Ryan, the two main coaches from the club, are involved in a community scheme in conjunction with Woking Borough Council, which includes a variety of events including visiting the residents at Kingsleigh on a weekly basis.
On their visits, they encourage the residents to participate in gentle exercises where the base exercise is repeated each week with small variations. The aim is to get residents to move arms and feet in various ways ie stretching, stamping feet and punching the air. They also use resistance bands and bean bags for throwing and catching to help with co-ordination.
One of the favourite exercises with residents is throwing, heading and kicking a beach ball. The last fifteen minutes is spent playing a game, which often gets very competitive with a lot of cheering taking place.
During the past twelve months, the group have taken residents to play crazy golf, arranged a trip to Surrey Arts for lunch with music and crafts and at Christmas they arranged a trip to the theatre.
The community group also pay for a singer to visit the home on a monthly basis to provide ‘singing for the brain’, and over the next six months they also have the following trips planned;
June: Forces Sweethearts– Musical Tribute Camberley Theatre
July/August: Tea on the River
December: Christmas Concert – Camberley Theatre.
Residents at Kingsleigh look forward to their weekly visits and enjoy the interaction with the young people whilst having fun and keeping fit!
