‘Understanding dementia’ event for family carers in Mildenhall

Home news

A free event to help people understand dementia and learn practical tips for how to communicate with people living with the condition will take place on Wednesday 16th July at Care UK’s new day centre, the Mildenhall Club in St John’s Close, Mildenhall. There is a choice of times and free light refreshments will be provided.

The event will be hosted by Care UK with independent speaker, Neil Mapes, who has a background in clinical psychology and dementia advocacy and helped establish one of the first Alzheimer’s Cafes in the UK. His community interest company, Dementia Adventure, specialises in connecting people living with dementia with the outdoors, nature and a sense of adventure.

Attendees will also be able to pick up complimentary copies of Care UK’s recently launched Listen, Talk, Connect guide, which provides guidance on how to communicate and connect with people living with the condition.

Mildenhall Lodge home manager, Sally Shadbolt, says: “It is very important that the right support and advice is available to those who care for a loved one with dementia and we very much look forward to hosting this event with Neil Mapes, who is very innovative. He’ll help people understand what dementia is and to learn how memories are lost, with practical tips on how overcome the communication barriers. All are welcome to attend.”

The event will take place in the Mildenhall Club, which is adjacent to the care home and offers day and respite services to help older people locally enjoy meeting up and keeping up with favourite hobbies. The Club is now open and offers flexible day care support, Monday to Friday, 9.30am-4pm.

For further information and to book a place at the event telephone 0333 321 1971 or email rosemary.waller@careuk.com

The event takes place in the day club at Mildenhall Lodge, St John’s Close, Mildenhall, Suffolk IP28 7NX.
