Community celebrate opening of new Ipswich care home

Residents at the new Prince George House care home in Ipswich were joined by relatives, the Care UK team, Suffolk County Council and the local community to celebrate the opening of their new home on 25^th March.

Two residents helped cut the ribbon at the official opening event alongside Councillor Alan Murray, Suffolk County Council cabinet member for health and adult care, and Ben Gummer MP.

Year 4 pupils from Ravenswood Community Primary School also joined in the celebrations by singing after the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Katherine Foley, Prince George House home manager, said: “Residents moved into Prince George House from Sidegate Lane and Crabbe Street care homes in Ipswich during February 2015. The move process went smoothly and residents are settling in well, making new friends and enjoying their new home.

The residents and Care UK teams have all been looking forward to the special opening event and we were delighted to welcome the local community to celebrate the exciting occasion with us.”

Councillor Alan Murray, Suffolk County Council cabinet member for health and adult care, said: “The opening of Prince George House marks the halfway point in our vision for the future of long term care in Suffolk.

“With the number of older people and those living with dementia in Suffolk set to double by 2030, it is essential that we have an appropriate provision in place that can support these ones to maintain physical fitness, make new friends and ensure their independence for longer.

“Prince George House boasts great facilities and I am delighted, as were the residents, to be involved in the grand opening. I am sure residents will be very pleased with their new home.”

Prince George House provides nursing, residential and dementia care for up to 80 residents. The development also includes the Prince George Club which will provide day and respite care services for older people living in their own homes, enabling them to keep active, meet new people and maintain their independence for longer.

Prince George House, on Mansbrook Boulevard, is the second new Care UK home to open in Ipswich, following Asterbury Place on Aster Road, which opened in July 2014. The opening of Prince George House, the fifth of ten new care homes for Suffolk, also marks the halfway point in Care UK’s county-wide development plan in partnership with Suffolk County Council. All ten care homes in the development plan will be open by January 2016.
