The NHS and Care UK join forces to create a very effective service in Aberdeen

A Care UK service in Aberdeen has been praised by inspectors following a recent visit from the Care Inspectorate.

Craig Court offers rehabilitation for adults of all ages who have an acquired brain injury, spinal injury or who have had a stroke. The programme at the service has been described by the Care Inspectorate as ‘extremely effective’ because of the warm, relaxed and friendly environment. The regular physio, care and support contribute to this environment and there is even pet therapy with regular visits from a friendly dog.

Inspector James West said: “The whole lot just works very, very well without a great deal of fuss or drama. They just seem to do the complicated things and the basic things extremely well. They have long-term care beds for people who have long-standing conditions and they support them very well. The rooms are personal, reflecting the person’s character and the things they are interested in. Craig Court performs consistently well across the board.”

Home manager Fiona Whyte said she’s very proud to lead such an excellent team. There’s also an advanced programme of activities at the home which Fiona says is not only part of the rehabilitation of patients, but also helps them socially.

Fiona said: “We work in joint partnership with the NHS so we’re a very close team and we all work together to promote the independence of residents. For long-term residents, this is their home, so we try to make it homely. As well as having specialist NHS therapists, I’ve also got highly-trained nurses and carers who work to promote independence but also take into account residents’ social needs. We also have an activities organiser so there are lots of activities that can be part of their rehabilitation but also for their social needs.”

Activities include everything from going for a walk, gardening, baking or even painting a fence in the garden – anything that will help the resident.

Fiona added: “Our team was so elated and so pleased to be awarded excellent grades. It’s really nice to be acknowledged for all the hard work. As manager of the home I know we’re not only working to maintain our high standards, but also striving to do things better.”
