Haverhill care home wins national award for great dementia care

Cleves Place care home in Haverhill has been recognised for its great dementia care against 114 Care UK care homes nationally.

The award for ‘Great Dementia Care’ was presented to Cleves Place home manager Sharlene Van Tonder at Care UK’s national Residential Care Services (RCS) Stars awards ceremony, held on 19th November at Heythrop Park in Oxfordshire.

The team at Cleves Place, on Millfields Way, won the award after impressing a panel of eight judges with a special film which illustrated residents’ daily lives in the home and how they are each encouraged to live life to the full.  The home was also praised for its excellent person-centred care and innovative dementia-friendly features, including a special indoor seaside area and beach hut which promotes reminiscence and sensory benefits. The home has also recently welcomed two new pets, a rescue dog named Emma and Nico the parrot, which were voted for and chosen by the residents and are already proving popular.

Sharlene Van Tonder said: “The team and I are so pleased to have won the award for ‘Great Dementia Care’. We are so passionate and committed to ensuring residents are happy and enjoying life at Cleves Place, and it’s brilliant to see that has been recognised nationally.”

Cleves Place was one of three Suffolk care homes to receive an award at the RCS Stars ceremony. Others were Cedrus House in Stowmarket, which won ‘Carer of the Year’ and Prince George House in Ipswich which won an award for ‘Outstanding Leadership’.
