The international day aims to create lasting links between care home residents and their local communities, and to develop relationships across the generations.
The events at Davers Court and Glastonbury Court in Bury St Edmunds, Mildenhall Lodge in Mildenhall and Cedrus House in Stowmarket are amongst thousands taking place across the UK to help challenge perceptions about the care environment and to show what day-to-day life is like for residents.
Glastonbury Court will be open from 2pm to 6pm with a carnival themed event in celebration of the Rio de Janeiro games this summer. There will be live entertainment, face painting, a Brazilian headdress competition and a dance show by Horringer Court Middle School pupils. Meanwhile, Davers Court will be opening its doors from 2pm to 6.30pm for a 1950s themed party with live music and a barbecue.
Cedrus House in Stowmarket, and Mildenhall Lodge in Mildenhall, will also be holding Rio carnival themed events. Cedrus House will be open from 2pm to 6pm with a steel band, a barbecue, a coconut shy and carnival floats. Mildenhall Lodge will be open from 2pm to 4.30pm with live music and a cocktail bar.
Katy Hughes, home manager at Mildenhall Lodge, said: “We are really looking forward to taking part in this year’s Care Home Open Day and to sharing with the community what life is like at a Care UK home in Suffolk. Visitors can expect a warm welcome at our fun event for all the family.”
Care Home Open Day is also an opportunity for visitors to meet the Care UK teams and pick up copies of Care UK’s free guides, which are full of practical hints and tips to support family carers and their loved ones living with dementia. These include ‘Listen, talk, connect’, ‘As Easy as ABC’, ‘Good to Go’ and the new ‘Eating as we age’ guide which provides practical tips and recipe ideas for eating well in older age.
