Care UK and Metnor start work on £5.6 million Edinburgh care home

Home news

Care UK and specialist construction partner Metnor Construction Ltd have celebrated the start of work on a new £5.6 million care home in Portobello, Edinburgh.

The care home will feature 60 en-suite bedrooms and will boost the provision of high quality residential care, specialist dementia care, nursing, and short term respite care in the city.

The purpose-built three-storey home, which is expected to welcome its first residents in October 2017, will feature facilities including a cinema and hairdressing salon.  A coffee shop will open onto a second floor terrace, where residents can take in views westwards to Arthur’s Seat and eastwards to the beach at Portobello. The home will also have a secure and landscaped garden for residents to enjoy, while some ground floor bedrooms will also have their own individual patios.

Speaking at the start on site ceremony, Gary Renton, construction project manager, said: “We are delighted work has begun on the new care home in Edinburgh; not least because this impressive development reflects our commitment to improving the provision of residential care in the city.

“At Care UK we take great pride in the build quality, layout and design of each individual home, as these factors can greatly impact the everyday experiences of those living in a care environment. This new care home will live up to these standards, and will provide a quality home for older people from Portobello and beyond.”

Chris Cant, managing director at Metnor Construction Ltd, added: “Construction of the new home has got off to a great start and we are currently on schedule for completion in April 2017.  This is a key project for Metnor and our 12th project with Care UK. Our collaborative approach works well and we are all proud to playing a part in the delivery of a high quality building that will welcome many residents for years to come.”

Designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence, the new care home will incorporate space for hobby and leisure activities.  The layout of the building will be configured into a series of individual suites, each having a dedicated lounge/ dining room, to help facilitate the creation of close knit communities.

Each bedroom at the care home will have an en-suite wet room, together with a flat-screen television, adjustable profile bed, and a 24-hour nurse call system.
